Do not cut perennials hard back at this time of year – any old foliage will give the crown some protection. You can mulch with compost or straw to help.
We are in a fairly mild spell at the moment but that may change. So keep an eye on the forecast and have some horticultural fleece ready to wrap around those more tender shrubs like Ceanothus, Pittosporum or anything with a hollow stem.
Sweep up any remaining leaves. Leave the grass a little longer through the winter. Remember to have your mower serviced ready for the spring.
Paths and Patios
Natural stone can get very slippy and icy in the winter. Have a small bag of sand or salt for making safe.
